The skincare routine you need in your life post-baby

While motherhood is a blissful time, not having a minute to spare can be stressful - especially if you were a beauty junkie before giving birth. Here's a routine whittled down to its bare bones so that you can have more time with your baby, but still feel like you've treated yourself.

The Body Saviours

During the nine months of pregnancy, your skin is stretched to the max. After having a baby, regaining tone and firmness while reducing stretch marks can be challenging; plus, hormonal fluctuations may also have caused pigmentation. A body scrub can help enormously with all of the above; it will help to brighten the skin by removing any dead cells and increase blood flow to the area, boosting cell renewal. Plus, formulas with added moisturising ingredients such as almond oil or shea butter will help to keep your skin soft and supple. After you've exfoliated, always apply a body cream, lotion or oil. If you are most concerned about sagging skin, try a firming formula. If it's the weight gain or water retention you'd like to tackle, caffeine can help. Either way, apply with a firm massage to really boost circulation and tone up tissues.

The Exercises

After giving birth, stomach skin can be very tricky to tone. Once your doctor has given you the go-ahead, you can start to tone up by strengthening your pelvic floor and abs.Lie on your back with your legs bent and your hands crossed behind your head. Take a deep breath and, as you exhale, lift your head and upper torso. Then rest. Aim to do 30 a day. Add a second set of 30 stretches, this time touching your knee with the opposite elbow, alternating between left and right.

Sleepless nights and general fatigue will both have an effect on your skin.
